Canada's First Wisdom Council to Meet

Newsdaily Canada
- A couple of weeks ago, we sent letters to approximately 500 Victoria residents, inviting them to make themselves eligible for the draw to become members of the first Wisdom Council. Names were chosen from the phone book, using a random number generator to select page numbers, column numbers, and location within the column. We followed the letter up with phone calls, and last night we selected the first 10 members of the council.

Islands - Victoria News : Venezuela Elections - Sunday, December 3

Venezuela Elections - Sunday, December 3

Victoria Peace Coalition
- Join us at 7 pm, 2994 Douglas Street (BCGEU Hall) in Victoria as we await the returns of the Venezuelan presidential election. We will contact our five election observers from Victoria as well as local representatives from Venezuela to give us a feel of the situation and the expected outcome of this election.

The evening will feature live music, dancing, as well as snacks.  The film "The Bolivarian Revolution: Enter the Oil Workers" will be shown. Venezuela is the world's 5th largest oil exporter, yet 80% of its population lives in poverty. In 1998 President Hugo Chávez was elected to use the oil revenue to tackle poverty. In April 2002 a coup against him was defeated by the millions who took to the streets. A few months later the élite and the CIA paralyzed Venezuela’s oil company PDVSA to bring Chávez down. Oil workers took over and worked round the clock to recover production.

Lower Mainland - Vancouver News : Just Say No to Wal-Mart and Big Box Stores
Posted by : rycroft on Tuesday, July 04, 2006 - 09:55 PM PST - 3303 Reads Calendar of Events
Just Say No to Wal-Mart and Big Box Stores

COPE
- The Coalition of Progressive Electors - On Thurs, July 06, 2006, at 7:30 pm, Vancouver City Council will hold a special meeting to hear what you, the people of Vancouver, think about retaining the Highway Oriented Retail (HOR) zoning on SE Marine Drive that currently allows Big Box stores.

A Big Box zone on SE Marine Drive will create more traffic and air pollution, increase asthma rates in children, generate more greenhouse gas emissions, and drive small neighbourhood stores out of business.

International News : Japan's Candle Night Summer Solstice 2006
Posted by : rycroft on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 11:09 PM PST - 2265 Reads Calendar of Events
Japan's Candle Night Summer Solstice 2006

Candle Night
- Candle Night Summer Solstice 2006. Turn out your lights for two hours on the Summer solstice, June 21st, eight to ten p.m. Do something special. Read a book with your child by candlelight. Enjoy a quiet dinner with a special person.  This night can mean many things for many people.  A time to save energy, to think about peace, to think about people in distant lands who share your planet. Pulling the plug open the window to a new world.  Awakens as to human freedom and diversity.  It is a process, finding a larger possibility of the human civilization.  By turning off lights for only two hours, we will be all loosely connected. Let's make a "wave of darkness" spread over the globe together.
