1,000 Strong for Ancient Forests Rally

Western Canada Wilderness Committee -
What is the Wilderness Committee calling on the BC Liberal government to do?  Key demands include:
  1. Enact concrete restrictions with timelines to quickly end the logging of old-growth forests on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland where old-growth forests are scarce.
  2. Ensure that our second-growth forests are logged sustainably.
  3. Ban raw log exports and help retool manufacturing facilities to process smaller-diameter second-growth logs instead of old-growth logs.

Shun Gary Lunn: Progressive Candidates Run-Off
Stop the Vote Split and Defeat the Conservatives

Shun Lunn - The Shun Lunn campaign is a call to action in an effort to prompt a pre-election "run off " style election, by the people for the people.  It is a non-partisan, grassroots campaign currently encouraging the federal riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands (S-GI) to undertake a democratic process that delivers appropriate representation for the Riding's majority.  The result should establish one candidate to run against and defeat Gary Lunn, the Conservative incumbent and Natural Resources Minister, in the upcoming Federal Election.

Canada's First Wisdom Council to Meet

Newsdaily Canada
- A couple of weeks ago, we sent letters to approximately 500 Victoria residents, inviting them to make themselves eligible for the draw to become members of the first Wisdom Council. Names were chosen from the phone book, using a random number generator to select page numbers, column numbers, and location within the column. We followed the letter up with phone calls, and last night we selected the first 10 members of the council.

Support Aboriginal Efforts to Protect Spaet Mountain, Victoria

Ben Isitt
- November 30, 2006 - Within the next 24 hours, the outcome of negotiations between local First Nations and the Bear Mountain Development Group over the future of Spaet Mountain in Langford should become more clear. Depending on the outcome, we may be called upon to expand our support for grassroots members of the Songhees and Tsartlip nations. At issue is the protection of the summit and southeasterly slope, which Aboriginals consider sacred but the developer wants to pave over as part of the Savory Road Connector between the Trans-Canada Highway and the luxury golf course and resort.

Venezuela Elections - Sunday, December 3

Victoria Peace Coalition
- Join us at 7 pm, 2994 Douglas Street (BCGEU Hall) in Victoria as we await the returns of the Venezuelan presidential election. We will contact our five election observers from Victoria as well as local representatives from Venezuela to give us a feel of the situation and the expected outcome of this election.

The evening will feature live music, dancing, as well as snacks.  The film "The Bolivarian Revolution: Enter the Oil Workers" will be shown. Venezuela is the world's 5th largest oil exporter, yet 80% of its population lives in poverty. In 1998 President Hugo Chávez was elected to use the oil revenue to tackle poverty. In April 2002 a coup against him was defeated by the millions who took to the streets. A few months later the élite and the CIA paralyzed Venezuela’s oil company PDVSA to bring Chávez down. Oil workers took over and worked round the clock to recover production.

Support First Nations Against Bear Mountain Developers

Ben Isitt
- Dear Friend -  I am writing to you because members of the Songhees and Tsartlip First Nations have asked for support.

Last week, a sacred cave near the summit of Spaet Mountain (Skirt/Bear Mountain in Langford) was exvacated and filled with tires and trees stumps to make way for the Bear Mountain development. Construction workers were instigated by their employer into a confrontation with First Nations chiefs. The province intervened and brokered a 2-week halt to construction, which expires on December 1st.
