Law Activists Press PM on Omar Khadr
Lawyers Against the War - The letter, which is being circulated for signatures by Lawyers Against the War (LAW), had signatures from a wide spectrum of people in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, including lawyers, academics, and peace and social justice advocates. Such diverse groups as the Canadian Arab Federation, Jews for a Just Peace, the U.S. National Lawyers Guild and several Canadian trade union committees were represented in the list of signatories. The letter was sent to Harper and all members of Parliament July 30, although LAW spokesperson Gail Davidson of Vancouver, B.C., said more signatures will be gathered and they will also be presented to the government at a later date.

Because Everyone In Canada Lives In An Igloo
Now that Vancouver has won the chance to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, these are some questions people from all over the world are asking. Believe it or not these questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website. Obviously the answers are a joke; but the questions were really asked!
Q: I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants grow?(England)
A. We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around and watch them die.

For Sale to the Highest Bidder: Telecom Policy in Canada
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives - March 11, 2008 - The CCPA is pleased to announce the release of For Sale to the Highest Bidder: Telecom Policy in Canada, edited by Marita Moll and Leslie Regan Shade. Copies of the book are available for $14.95 (plus shipping and GST) from the CCPA.
More than ever before, we depend on telecommunications services to conduct our economic, cultural and social lives. But, after 100 years of managing and controlling this industry to safeguard the interests of all Canadians, recent government decisions are leading us to a communications future that doesn't include us all.

Stop Cutting Taxes, Start Solving Problems
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) - Today the CCPA released the 2008 Alternative Federal Budget (AFB). The AFB is coordinated by the CCPA and is the result of collaborative deliberations by representatives of a wide spectrum of civil society organizations. Among the innovations in this year's AFB: a gender budget analysis; a poverty reduction plan; a national infrastructure plan; a sectoral development strategy to address the manufacturing crisis; and a greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan.
All Alternative Budget materials are available on the CCPA web site in both English and French:

MAJIIC Wars:
Canada's RADARSAT satellite company sold to "weapons & space" giant, ATK
Press for Conversion! - Richard Sanders - The news today (January 9, 2008) is that a Canadian company, called MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), will sell off its space divisions to the US war industry giant, called Alliant Techsystems (ATK).
Just a few weeks ago (December 14, 2007), the world's most advanced "synthetic aperture radar" satellite, a Canadian invention called RADARSAT-2, was finally blasted into space.

Landmine Work Earns Axworthy Apparent Tory Snub
Chris Cobb - The former Liberal minister of foreign affairs isn't in the spotlight on the 10th anniversary of the treaty he helped create. The Harper government marked the 10th anniversary of the global international landmines treaty yesterday with an $80-million gift for mine clearance in Afghanistan — and with an apparent snub to Lloyd Axworthy, the former Liberal minister of foreign affairs who is credited worldwide with being a pivotal figure in the creation of the treaty.

Harper Ahead of Dion But Voters Shift Away From Leaders
The latest Nanos Poll indicates that politicians in general may be the first casualties of the Schreiber Affair. The ongoing Nanos Federal Leadership Report Card Tracking indicates that Canadians are moving away from all party leaders into the "none of the above" or "unsure". It is quite unprecedented to see movement away from all the leaders. With the Schreiber Affair in the news, it seems a growing number of Canadians, tar all politicians with the same brush.

UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing: Mission to Canada
Miloon Kothari - Today I am finishing a visit to Canada at the invitation of the Government of Canada that started on 9 October. The general objectives of this mission were to examine and report on the status of realization of the right to adequate housing in Canada and to engage in dialogues with the Government and the civil society –what you call in Canada non-governmental organizations – in their efforts to secure these rights.
I visited urban and rural areas, including Montréal, Kahnawake territories, Edmonton, Little Buffalo and Lubicon, Vancouver, Musqueam territories, Toronto and Ottawa. In these locations, I met with high-ranking officials and representatives of various Government agencies. I also took testimonies from many women, men, youth and children across the country that were homeless or living in adequate and insecure housing; I met with community-based housing and homelessness service providers, housing agencies, representatives of Aboriginal peoples and civil society organizations. In all cities I
participated in large public forums and hearings.

Sobering Message for Politicians and Educators
Canadian Policy Research Networks - October 18, 2007 – As the federal parties jockey around the Throne Speech, one of the most comprehensive studies of young people’s attitudes to politics delivers a sobering message for both politicians and educators.
Lost in Translation: (Mis)Understanding Youth Engagement was released today by Canadian Policy Research Networks. It analyzes and expands upon six individual studies commissioned by CPRN since it held a groundbreaking “National Youth Dialogue and Summit” in 2005.
The central finding is that ‘Generation Y’ – those born after 1979 – is far from apathetical and apolitical. However, while very much tuned into small “p” political life, young Canadians are increasingly disenchanted with our formal political institutions and politics as currently practiced.

Tell Canada to Stop Blacklisting Peacemakers
CODEPINK - Since two of our CODEPINK stalwarts, Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright, were denied entry to Canada this month for their peaceful protests, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our neighbors to the north.
"I am ashamed to be Canadian when I see this type of action being taken by the country I love!!! Our people do NOT support the U.S. wars, and we want to resume our traditional role as peacemakers!" -- Jo Nicholas Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Referendum on "Security and Prosperity" Partnerhsip, Not Parliamentary Vote
Canada Action Party - Connie Fogal - A decison about the restructuring of Canada into an integrated North America is NOT A DECISION FOR PARLIAMENT, BUT FOR THE CITIZENS OF CANADA if it is to be considered at all. What every Parliamentarian should do is call for a nonconfidence vote on this issue to cease unification of Canada the USA and Mexico, and then run a campaign on the life of Canada, not its death.

URGENT Action: Alison Bodine Arrested at the Border!
September 14 - My daughter Nita called today to say her room mate and fellow anti war organizer, Allison was arrested at the border. Canadian border agents didn't like some of the political material in her car. This gives me the creeps. On the surface it looks like intolerance of dissent on a federal level in Canada. Besides, it hits very close to home! Nita and Allison have been working together daily for a couple of years now. See below about efforts to set her free and keep her in Canada. Please share this news with anyone who might be interested. More on the MAWO web site http://www.mawovancouver.org/, both about efforts to get her released and also a taste of some of the group's activities and views which officials seem to find unacceptable. - Jim

No Nukes Alberta. No Thanks.
Newsdaily Canada - Carl Chaplin - Please inform Dawson Creek Mayor Calvin Kruk that there are many people in British Columbia (and probably in Alberta too) who are alarmed at the thought that an Alberta company has proposed building a nuclear power plant next to our province.

Risks and Dangers of Nuclear Energy
Waging Peace - Proliferation Risks - Plutonium is a man-made waste product of nuclear fission, which can be used either for fuel in nuclear power plants or for bombs. In the year 2000, an estimated 310 tons (620,000 pounds) of civilian, weapons-usable plutonium had been produced. Less than 8 kilograms (about 18 pounds) of plutonium is enough for one Nagasaki-type bomb. Thus, in the year 2000 alone, enough plutonium was created to make more than 34,000 nuclear weapons.
