20 Months To BC Electoral Reform Vote

Bruce Hallsor -
In just twenty short months British Columbians will go to the polls. On May 12th, 2009 we get a second chance to vote YES for BC-STV. In May 2005, 57.7% of voters voted YES. Only twice before have we elected our provincial government with support that high! In 2001 when our provincial government was elected with slightly less, 57.6%, and also carried 77 out of 79 ridings, it was called a landslide. For BC-STV, it fell just short of the unprecedented 60% threshold.

British Columbia News : Victoria Status of Women Action Group Update

Victoria Status of Women Action Group Update

SWAG
- January 01, 2007 - The major part of the funding problem for groups like SWAG is that we are considered "political" and cannot become a registered charity with Revenue Canada so we cannot offer tax-deductible receipts for donations. Activities that advocate changes to laws or policies (rallies, letter or email campaigns for example), are considered "political activities" by Revenue Canada. So alleviating poverty is fine -- advocating policies to end poverty is not allowed.

In spite of this,  groups like the Fraser Institute, are registered charities. These "free" market think tanks that advocate that everyone must sink or swim in the "free" market, can only exist because they can beg for tax-deductible charity donations.

British Columbia News : BC Liberal Connection to Land Give-Away

BC Liberal Connection to Land Give-Away

Newsdaily.ca
- Ben Isitt - I've recently come across information implicating the BC Liberals in a give-away of 43 hectares of Crown Land next to Goldstream Provincial Park in July 2001 -- a month after being sworn into office. This land is now part of the Bear Mountain Resort on Spaet/Skirt Mountain, a property at the centre of a major controversy over protection of Aboriginal cultural sites and ecosystem encroachment. A major player in this Crown land transfer was Robert Flitton, current Residential Development Manager for Bear Mountain and a former Deputy Minister of Lands in the Bill Bennett and Vander Zalm governments. This information has been confirmed in a Land Titles search and the sources documented below, including comments by former NDP MLA Bob Williams from Hansard in the late 1980s.

BC Liberals Play Blame Game on Homeless, Mentally Ill

Bill Tielman
- November 27, 2006 - The B.C. Liberal government is launching a public-relations campaign to avoid being blamed for rising homelessness and mentally ill people on the street, internal government documents obtained by 24 hours indicate.

And a group representing people with mental and physical disabilities is appalled.

Sooke Hills - Coastal Oil Drilling in BC?

Western Canada Wilderness Committee
- Victoria - Please take a wee bit of time to write 2 quick, important letters:  One to ensure the ecological integrity of the new Sooke Hills regional parks west of Victoria, and another to keep BC's Pacific Coast safe from dirty oil exploration, drilling, and transportation, which is being actively pushed for by Premier Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberal government.  - Ken Wu, Western Canada Wilderness Committee

British Columbia News : Ferry Workers Call for Judicial Review Into Sinking

Ferry Workers Call for Judicial Review Into Sinking

The BC Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union has reviewed Captain Darin Bowland's affidavit regarding safety issues at BC Ferries and are forwarding it to legal counsel for their input and evaluation. Captain Bowland's statements confirm concerns the Union has raised over the years about operational and occupational health and safety matters at BC Ferries.

The Union is supportive of the operational safety policy review currently being conducted by Mr. George Morfitt and his team. The Union encourages the auditor to investigate the statements contained in the affidavit in the context of the overall operational safety audit.

Further given the controversy regarding safety at BC Ferries, the BCFMWU are requesting a judicial review, as per the Nemetz Inquiry, be convened into the sinking of the MV Queen of the North and a full and complete audit be conducted into all aspects of the safety management system at BC Ferries including worker health and safety and environmental impact issues.

British Columbia News : BC School Fee Confusion - Easy Solution
Posted by : rycroft on Sunday, October 15, 2006 - 09:22 PM PST - 2054 Reads News
BC School Fee Confusion - Easy Solution

BC Advocacy Institute
- John Young - The B.C. Supreme Court, in a landmark decision on September 29, struck down the widespread practice of charging fees for the official education program in B.C. schools.

Since the decision, there has been widespread confusion about "school fees" and fear that the court's decision will harm our children's education due to the loss of these revenues. As a lifelong educator, and the person who brought this court action against this discriminatory and illegal policy of charging fees, I want to clear up the confusion and fear.

The court's decision is simple: anything and everything that is required  for any children's course (including electives), between Kindergarten and Grade 12, is free. So there can be no course fees, no instrument rentals, and no charges for calculators, text books, equipment, necessary materials, etc.

British Columbia News : Effects of Conservation Covenants on BC Property Taxes

Effects of Conservation Covenants on BC Property Taxes

Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia
- August 30, 2006 - For Immediate Release - For a Salt Spring Landowner, a Conservation Covenant "allowed me to stay in the home I love. I am very happy with the program, and the costs of the baseline and other fees for registering the covenant were more than made up for in the first year's tax reductions."

When a landowner decides to protect natural areas on their property, there are some financial costs, and there are some benefits. Throughout the province, many landowners are struggling to keep natural areas on their lands, whether it is a grove of trees, a wetland or pond that is home to numerous bird species, or some other unique habitat. However, the economic costs of increasing property values leads some owners to subdivide or clear the very elements of nature that made that home special to the landowner.
