We are thrilled to announce OPEN CINEMA's Sixth Season launch on October 8th, 2008! Get ready for another great series of topical and newly released social-issue documentary screenings in cafe-style venues, followed by open forum discussion with filmmakers and guests.
OPEN CINEMA board members, staff, advisors and volunteers took time over the summer to explore the organization's future and we are excited about the development of a promising new strategic partnership with MediaNet, a founding sponsor since 2003. More details to follow...

1. Season Six launches October 8th, 2008
OC's sixth season of thought-provoking films kicks off with a collaboration with local filmmaking co-operative MediaNet!
As the grand finale event of MediaNet's Eco Doc Program (Sept 13-Oct 5), the evening will showcase a dozen locally-made, hot-off-the-press short films about issues relating to the environment, global warming and sustainable development, followed by OC's usual post-screening discussion about the films, filmmaking, environmental issues and innovative ways to use media for social change. Not to be missed!

MediaNet Announces "Eco-Doc" program for environmental short film production
VICTORIA - On Sept 13, MediaNet launches its new Eco-Doc program for filmmakers and environmentalists to realize and communicate their visions about environmental issues to Victoria, to BC and to the world.
MediaNet, in partnership with The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, is presenting a 3 week program for the Eco-Doc participants and for the broader Victoria community, with a week of seminars and workshops, followed by 2 weeks of production for participants, and culminating in a screening of the finished short films co-presented by Open Cinema on Oct 8th, at the Victoria Event Center.
We are proud to have MediaNet members and Media Partners join with us to bring this mentored filmmaking program to the Victoria community. The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is offering its gallery space for the seminars and workshops http://www.cacgv.ca/ ; Envirospeaktv http://www.envirospeak.tv/ , the NFB's Citizen SHIFT program, and Open Cinema http://www.opencinema.ca/ will be partnering to present the created works on Oct 8th, and on the web after that. Victoria non-profit environmental groups like Capital Bike and Walk, and the Dogwood Initiative, will be providing speakers.

The cost of the program is $150 and guarantees participants a space in all the workshops as well as access to MediaNet equipment and editing facilities. As well, participants will receiavailableve ongoing technical and production mentoring. There are a limited number of spaces available in this program.

4. April 2008 Fundraiser update
OPEN CINEMA and Videa's Earth Day fundraiser in April was a great success! A standing-room-only crowd of 250 folks packed the Victoria Event Centre to watch the Canadian premiere of the award-winning film FLOW: For Love of Water, and participate in the silent and live auctions. Donations and auction sales brought in over $5000! These funds are a much-needed support to OC's ongoing programming. A big thankyou to everyone who supported the event.
Tax receipts for donations will be mailed to those who requested them within the next few weeks.
